A Breath of Fresh Air at the NIGP Forum
Sometimes you don’t realize the full scope of your profession until you see it all in one place. Attending the recent National Institute of Government Procurement (NIGP) Forum was an eye-opening reminder of just how big the world of public procurement is. The event provided a valuable "breath of fresh air" and a much-needed perspective that has been significant since returning to the office.
One of the recurring themes from every plenary session was the importance of "care leadership." This message resonated deeply, especially as we navigate a period of significant change and growth here at CDOT. It's affirming to hear that the principles we strive for are at the forefront of the industry and to recognize that while we have areas to grow, we are in a pretty good place.
The sessions were also a powerful call to action. While it was at times discouraging to hear some of the negativity directed towards our customers, it was also deeply inspiring. It highlighted the need to rise above our default habits and systems and intentionally build a culture of connection and dedication. The key isn't about being right, but about achieving results while maintaining relationships. This means communicating differently—listening to respond, not react, and asking better questions to help others connect the dots on their own. It’s a shift in mindset: if you look for reasons to criticize, you’ll find them. But if you focus your energy on celebrating others and making them the star, you build a positive culture.
The Forum was also a place of personal significance. Back in July, I learned I had passed the Certified Professional Public Buyer (CPPB) exam, and I was taken aback by how much it meant to see my name displayed on the UPPCC recognition board at the vendor expo. The expo was also a cool opportunity to build new relationships and reconnect with familiar faces.
Looking back, the timing of the Forum couldn't have been better. Since my return, it has been non-stop, pedal-to-the-metal. The energy and perspective gained there have been crucial for navigating this busy and challenging season, helping me look forward to the progress we can make and the new opportunities ahead.
Ultimately, the best part of the experience was spending quality time with two of my dear coworkers, Lisa Hollerbach and Lisa Morford. I have learned so much from both of them. We collaborate well, and they are simply great, caring, and amazing people. I feel incredibly lucky to work alongside them every day.
